Super Mascots

Creative Daisy Dog looks at the world through a creative lens.  They are enterprising and love to solve problems in novel ways.  They think outside the box and lead by example, always willing to help and explore new ways of doing things.  Reflective Ozzie Owl is the most inquisitive of the Super Mascots.  They take the time to look back on their learning and ask questions about where they’ve been and where they’re going, how to do better and how to change things for the better.

Heads Up from Mr Davies!

This week our classes have finalised their topic plans for the Autumn term, listening to Pupil Voice to shape the learning. Please find our curriculum information on this page for all Bay Groups:

Come along and meet the Bay Team teachers next week to find out more.

As ever it’s been lovely talking to the children around the importance of Community in our assemblies and around the school. We are also excited to promote Parkrun by registering our school as a Parkrun Primary School. To find out more and register your child for the nearest one check out this link. We look forward to sharing more about this in the future.

Mr Davies

Super Mascots

This week we’re introducing you to Collaborative Buzz-Bee and Independent Isha Iguana.  Isha Iguana is a confident and independent super mascot who looks out for others while taking responsibility of their learning.  They help make the school a kind, safe, and positive place. Buzz-Bee works to connect our school with the wider community in a caring and ethical way.  They work hard to show respect and to think critically about how they can help those around them.

School in Reach—Parent/Carer Workshops

We are delighted that the CAMHS School In Reach team are coming back again to host a number of parent/carer workshops.  The first one will focus on Emotional Regulation and take place at school on Friday, Oct 3rd after drop off. The workshop is designed to support parents with strategies to help with emotional regulation and is a great way to access the School In Reach programme.

A Note from the Headteacher

It has been lovely getting to know the children and see them settling in. We have shared an assembly about the importance of Community. I am looking forward to taking forward some of the brilliant suggestions they have given.

We are grateful as ever to our Friends of Brynmill Primary PTA for giving up their time to host a pre-loved uniform sale. It is lovely to see so many in our school colours.

From Monday next week, we have a change of gate in the morning to announce for both Caswell N and Oxwich M on De Breos Street. Pupils for these classes will now use the Trafalgar Place entrance at Gate 2 in the morning. They will continue to use the De Breos Street gate to leave at the end of the day. This will help streamline site security and allow pupils to socialise with all their peers in the morning.

Super Mascots

If you’ve been at Brynmill for a while, you may have heard your children talking about the Mindset Mascots.  Since their inception, they helped encourage the children to develop certain growth minds sets and gave teachers a cohesive way to talk about them . Over the years, they’ve become a bit tired and the way they were being used had changed.  Last year, staff with the help of the Learning Detectives Pupil Voice group gave our Mascots a makeover to better represent their new roles.  They are no longer called the Mindset Mascots, they are now the Super Mascots!

We have Resilient Rocky Raccoon, Collaborative Buzz-Bee, Creative Daisy Dog, Independent Isha Iguana, Cennin Swper, and Reflective Ozzie Owl.  Over the next few weeks, we’ll introduce them to you in the newsletter.  Hopefully, you’ll be hearing more about them from your child as the year goes on as well.  They will also feature on the Star of the Week badges, reflecting which Super Mascot was exemplified during the week.

Bay Team Meetings

These are opportunities for parents / carers to come in and informally meet with their child’s class teachers, and other parents, to learn a bit about the curriculum and routines in their Bay Groups.

Gates will open at 3.30pm, ready for a 3.45pm start.

  • Monday 22nd September – Bracelet (Mrs Lewis, Mrs Breeze, Mrs Roach)
  • Tuesday 23rd September – Oxwich (Mrs Evans, Mrs Hogan, Miss Martin)
  • Wednesday 24th September – Pobbles (Mrs Nicholas, Mrs Coghlin, Mrs Stewart)
  • Thursday 25th September – Caswell (Mrs Howard, Miss Maliphant, Mr Newey)

Caswell Class Trip

The Caswell Trip to the National Roman Legion Museum in Caerleon is coming on September 24th. The cost is £25 per child. We appreciate that this is a lot of money, but we know that the experience will bring learning to life! Contributions can be paid in full or instalments via iPay. If you haven’t already done so, please fill in the consent/lunch form as soon as possible.  https://forms.office.com/e/KZpvwFnBqE

Welcome back September 25

Welcome Back!

I hope you all had a lovely summer with plenty of time to rest, relax and enjoy family adventures. It’s wonderful to see the school full of energy again, and I’d like to give a heartfelt welcome back to our families, both familiar faces and those who are joining us for the very first time. We’re so pleased to have you with us.

Vision and Community

I’m really excited about the year ahead as we take our next steps together. My vision is very much about growing our sense of community – a place where children feel they belong, where families feel part of the journey, and where we can achieve even more by working together. Volunteers play such an important part in this, and we’ll be seeking to open up more opportunities this year for parents, carers and friends of the school to get involved.

Uniform

You’ll also hear us talking a little about uniform over the coming weeks. While we don’t insist on it, we do encourage children to wear it, as it helps to create a sense of belonging and pride in our school. We’ll be exploring ways to make this easier for everyone, including the possibility of a swap shop to recycle and share items. For families who’d like to buy new, J & S Products in Tycoch continues to be a good place to source.

Communication

This term we’ll also be starting some gentle awareness-raising around Schools of Sanctuary – more details and updates are on our website here. Linked to this is clear information and communication. We currently use Class Dojo for updates and our website for public-facing information. This year we expect changes to our school data and communication systems that are managed by the local authority. We rely on your child’s education being a partnership between us and parents, and I would emphasise that the website will remain the key area for information at https://brynmill-primary-school1.j2bloggy.com/

A new start

As part of any new leadership, there is an opportunity to look at what is working well and what needs to change. Some of those changes are already in place with our new staff and roles. I look forward to listening to the views of pupils, parents, staff and our wider community to help shape the future direction together.

Thank you for your support so far – it really does make such a difference. I’m looking forward to a year full of learning, laughter, and shared achievements.

A Word from Miss Simons

Dear Brynmill Community,

As I prepare to retire, I want to take a moment to wish you all a happy and restful summer. It’s hard to put into words just how much I will miss our wonderful children, dedicated staff, committed governors, supportive families, and the wider community that makes Brynmill so special.

I am deeply grateful for all the support, kindness, and encouragement I’ve received over the years. It has been an absolute privilege to serve as the head teacher of a school community that truly lives and breathes our motto:

“Being different, belonging together, being the best you can be.”

I leave secure in the knowledge that the school is in the safe and capable hands of Mr. Davies, and I wish him the very best as he takes on this special role.

I step away with immense pride in all that we’ve achieved together over the years and with full confidence that Brynmill will continue to thrive. Thank you for allowing me to be part of your journey.

With warmest wishes and heartfelt thanks,

Jo Simons

School Is Out for Summer!

It has been an eventful last week of school this past week as we not only said good bye to our Year 6 class but to Ms Simons as well.

  • The children enjoyed exploring their new classrooms on Tuesday during transition morning and were excited to share their workbooks with their parents in the afternoon.
  • On Wednesday, the Leavers had their traditional Golden Table Lunch which judging by the excited chatter coming from the dining hall, they all relished.
  • Thursday we had the Year 6’s grace the stage on last time for their Leavers Assembly.  They did a wonderful job recounting their years at Brynmill and sang some great songs which brought many a tear to those listening.  In the afternoon, the whole school gathered in the front yard to enjoy the Joe’s Ice Cream Treat from the Friends of Brynmill as well as a bit of dance party.
  • Friday there was an all school assembly to celebrate Ms Simon’s time at Brynmill. There was singing, speeches, presents, and a lovely video tribute from all the students and staff.

Goodbye Ms Simons

Mrs Simons embarks today on her well-deserved retirement after an incredible 18 years of dedicated service to our school community.  Her commitment, passion, and leadership have left an indelible mark on students, staff, and parents alike. Thank you for your unwavering dedication and the remarkable impact you’ve made.  We wish you a retirement filled with joy, relaxation, and new adventures.

PTA News

We’ve had another fantastic year together, planning and hosting events for the enjoyment of the school community. The hard work in planning our events is far outweighed by the joy we see on children’s faces during them. We want to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who has come along and supported our events. Of course, these events couldn’t happen without the invaluable support of the school staff. And to our incredible parent and grandparent volunteers, thank you so much! Your help and support mean the world to the committee and make it possible for us to hold our events. We can’t wait for a new school year, filled with new opportunities to have fun together and raise funds for the school.

Labelling Belongings

As new uniforms, water bottles, lunches, etc are bought over the summer, please remember to label them before the new school year starts.  We’ve accumulated approximately 13 kilos worth of lost and found over the course of this last term.  Everything with labels has been returned to students.

The school has accounts with 2 two sticker label companies where we are able to earn a commission for every order placed as long as our school ID is used.

Retirement Collection for Miss Simons

A few parents have asked whether we are organising a collection for Miss Simons’ retirement. While there is absolutely no obligation, if you would like to contribute, please send any donations (cash only) to the school office. Thank you for helping us celebrate her many years of dedication!

This Week:

  • Cricket Wales came and ran sessions all day with the Caswell and Oxwich classes.  They were able to participate in various cricket drills and enjoyed an energetic introduction to cricket.
  • The halls were a bit quieter as most of the Year 6s were away on Transition Days as they get ready for next school year.
  • The Bay Teams have been busy getting their products and stalls ready for this afternoon’s fete.
  • The Sketty Scouts welcomed some of our students for a carousel of scouting activities.
