Today we said goodbye to Eirlys our long serving Lollipop Lady, who is leaving us  after 26 years, we are very sorry to see her go and wish her a long and happy retirement.

The council are looking for a replacement, please see our Dojo post for more information.

Next week we have half term, so we look forward to seeing you all on Monday 24th February.

If you are having a clear out over half term, please remember we have our termly Rags 2 Riches Appeal for old clean clothing coming up. The money raised is used to pay for eco friendly resources and activities.

Attendance – Congratulations to Y1/2B with 97.1%, and to Y4/5J with 97.4% attendance this week, llongyfarchiadau!

Attendance Prizes –  All children with 96% attendance and above are entered into a prize draw every term and have the chance to win a prize. We have distributed book tokens to this term’s winners. Congratulations and keep up the good attendance!

Applying for holidays during Term Time.In line with National, Welsh Government and Local Authority guidance we actively discourage taking holidays during term time, and would like to remind you of the link between attainment and attendance, and that there is no automatic right to withdraw your child from school during term time. Any request for authorised term time absence will be judged on merit and may not be authorised.

Please complete the Notification of Absence, and return to the school at least 10 school days before the holiday. This allows time for the School Attendance Officer and Headteacher to consider the merits of any application. Any forms submitted less than 10 school days  will  not be considered and will automatically be unauthorised.

For holidays of 10 school days or less the School Attendance Officer and Headteacher will consider the merits of the application.

For holidays of over 10 school days, or if the application will bring the pupil’s attendance below 90%, we will notify the schools Education Welfare Officer.

For holidays of over 20 school days, or if the pupil does not return on the agreed date the pupil will be taken off roll, and the parent will have to reapply. Please note we cannot guarantee that a place will be available on your return.

The Local Authority may (depending on circumstances) issue a fixed penalty notice or commence formal prosecution for failing to secure regular attendance at school.

Our cross country team is going from strength to strength. Here is a summary of our recent 2nd round fixture!

Girls positions: 6th Nia; 9th Masha; 10th Eva-Lily; 14th Lara D; 25th Rhiannon ; 36th Emily .

Boys: 11th Daniel; 14th Jack; 15th Noah; 16th Cody; 20th Theo; 27th Iolo.

Great work all around, smiles as well – I think they enjoyed it!

Here are some photos from the competition, kindly taken by Mrs Sullivan, whilst I was huddled in coats (!)

Another busy week at Brynmill Primary!

Attendance – Congratulations to Y1/2L with 98%, and Y4/5J with 95.8% attendance this week. Llongyfarchiadau! And congratulations to Mrs Timaeus class who won the class attendance award for last term, they have celebrated with a pyjama party and lots of goodies to eat and drink.

The Netball Team competed in a tournament – On Wednesday night  a welsh coach came to our Netball training session. We practised our passing and footwork. On Thursday , we went to a Netball Tournament. There were eight teams and we played a five minute game against each team . We won one game and lost a couple but overall we did  well. I think everyone was proud of each other . The atmosphere in the room was great. We had fun watching the other matches.. We are looking forward to our next tournament. – Hazel

Y1/2 had a visit from Animal Zone as part of their topic on Mini Zoo – We had an amazing time when Animal Zone visited us on Wednesday. he brought snakes, tarantulas, a tortoise, millipedes, cockroaches, toads and more. We could hold the animals and we were taken photos of with the animals on a green screen. The animals were from the rain forest but some of them weren’t. It was a fantastic visit. He was funny, smart and kind. We were amazed, he taught us a lot.  – Ralph & Tamerlan

Blue Peter Book  Awards – A few months ago our school was picked to be one of 12 schools to be judges for this year’s Blue Peter Book Awards.  30 of us had 6 books to read, they were a mix of fiction and non-fiction.  I absolutely loved to read all the books especially ‘Rise Up’ because it really inspired me.  I couldn’t believe those young people changed our world.  In fact one day I want to be like them.  We are looking forward to finding out the winning books on Blue Peter on World Book Day.  I loved having the opportunity to read the books and be a part of Blue Peter. – Ishaaq

World Book Day – Thursday 5th March is World Book Day, we would like to invite children to dress up as a book character and/ or bring a favourite book to school.

Eco Club – Our Eco Club have been learning about the negative effects of cars idling outside schools and have designed postersFacts include:-

  • An idling vehicle emits more pollution than a vehicle travelling at 30mph
  • Idling your engine for just 10 minutes releases a pound of CO2 into the air
  • Turning your engine off and on again causes less pollution than keeping the engine running.

I am writing to inform you about turning your car of when you are waiting to pick up your child. It lets of a lot of fumes that is not good for your health.  Did you know that if you keep your car running for longer than 10 seconds it lets off more fumes than it would if you turned your car of and then back on again. We as an eco-council and club are trying hard to keep our environment healthy and are school plastic free. If your child would like to join eco club, you can get a letter from the office. Sincerely, Nia –  on behalf of the Eco club and Eco Council

Eirlys, the lollipop lady – Unfortunately Eirlys our School Crossing Patrol will be retiring next week after many years of service,  if you would like to contribute towards a leaving gift we would be happy to accept donations.

Y3/4 Urdd Trip –  Estelle & Abbey were very enthusiastic about the trip.  “The bowling trip was fun, and we loved the speedboat ride. The food was really good, especially the hash browns. In the evening we watched Toy Story 4  and ate all our snacks. We were tired out by all the activities and had a good nights sleep” Diolch girls, we are glad you enjoyed it.

Assembly – Thank you to the Ocean Conservation Trust for our Slimy Seas Assembly this week, we learnt lots of disgusting facts about Hag Fish, Parrot Fish,Limpets and Octopi and pretended to be Sharks!

School Dinners – Parents are reminded that there has been a zero debt policy in place for school meals since September 2017. School dinners must be paid for in advance. It is a parent’s responsibility to either make sure that there are sufficient funds in their child’s account to enable them to order a school dinner at morning registration, or to provide them with a packed lunch. Going forward; allowing an unpaid meal, even from day one, will require approval by the head teacher. Some parents may find it useful to enable the auto top-up function on sQuid – if you need any help with this please ask at the school office.

Eco Club – Last year our Eco Club was filmed for Swansea Bay TV about our Plastic Free Day, you can watch the clip here

Lateness – We would like to remind parents that school starts at 8.50 am. Children are encouraged to arrive between 8:40 am and 8:50 am  so that they are  ready to line up and enter school with their class at the beginning of the school day.  Foundation Phase Parents should wait with their child(ren) until the teacher comes on duty.

If you find that the roads are busy at the start of the school day please consider using our  Free Breakfast Club which  starts at 8.10am, when then is less traffic.

We understand that people can have occasional problems which means they are late, however some parents are late on a regular basis, causing disruption for office staff, teachers and class mates.

Being 5 minutes late every day gives a total of

25 minutes every week

316 minutes a term

2 full days a year
